Guided tour of the “Pigneux” salt marsh
Guided tour of the salt marsh with the paludiers Ursula and Nicolas.
Guided tour of the salt marsh with the paludiers Ursula and Nicolas.
The tour is about 2,5 hours and will take you off the beaten tracks on a fascinating journey from the ocean into the salt marsh. Follow the tidal cycle and discover ancestral working methods now registered in the French national inventory of intangible cultural heritage.
According to the weather, we recommend you to wear sturdy footwear or wellies, rain coats or sun hats. We will walk along the “traict” (a shallow sandy wetland), on the banks beside the “étier” (mash creek) to follow the water’s journey, all the way into the shallow pools shaped in clay, where it will finally turn into salt in summer.
Followed by seagulls, you might surprise an avocet and its offspring or a flock of sterns on our way through tidal marshes and banks. Depending on the season, you will be able to try samphire, wild fennel or young mustard sprouts. In this exceptional setting you will learn about the functioning of a salt marsh and about the hard, yet rewarding job of the paludier.
The tour will end at the “Salorge de Rostu”, a traditional salt barn where Nicolas stores the salt.
