Coarse salt, salt flower – bath salt
The ocean, the sun, the wind and ancestral know-how allow for our unique salt to crystallise in the Guérande peninsula.
It’s not just any type of salt, especially not here! There are two very different types: the “coarse salt” or “grey salt” which crystallises in the water and lays on the clay ground of the production pools (oeillets), which is where it gets its colour from. The salt worker (paludier) then harvests the salt with a “las”, a 5 meters long tool with a wooden board at the end used like a rake.
The grey salt is the cooking salt, it is used for boiling, baking fish or meat in salt crust but also to preserve and marinate.
Alternative medicines clearly recognise the benefits of “grey salt”. Diluted in water, grey salt can be used for gargling, steaming or as bath salt.
The “salt flower” crystallises on the water surface when the wind is right. This “flower” is much finer and because it isn’t in contact with the clay surface, it therefore perfectly white. It is delicately harvested, picked, before the grey salt and only represents a small portion of the overall harvest. When done right, it even has the delicate fragrance of violet!
The strong commitment we have towards our products goes hand in hand with our social commitment too. This is why the conditioning of our salt is carried out by an ESAT, a trusted structure that provides a professional activity, medical-social and educational support to people with disabilities.
Mindful of our planet, we have removed any plastic packaging from our products. We now provide our salt in wooden boxes and baskets, made in France from sustainably managed poplar groves. Another advantage of this packaging is that it allows our naturally humid salt to dry in and even looks good on the dinner table!
The practices and know-how of the paludiers for the production of Guérande sea salt has been registered in the French national inventory of intangible cultural heritage since December 2024.
The quality and harvesting methods mean that our salt is a certified organic product. It also fulfils the specifications of “Accueil-Paysan” (a farmers’ network) products and therefore bears the “Produits Paysans” label (a label for farm produce).
